Now let’s find out how you can start a blog and make money from scratch even in 2021 and if you’re a complete beginner.
Let’s jump right into the nitty-gritty details…
Choose Your Niche
Some people have a very clear vision of what they want to start a blog about. In my personal experience, most people who want to learn how to start a blog don’t know what to pick.
Whatever your reason for researching on how to set up a blog, I can tell you all you when it comes to choosing a blog topic, just pick something that you’re interested in at first.
You may not be an authority on the topic just yet, but select something that you will not get bored learning about yourself.
Here’s a list of broad topics to get you thinking about some topics to blog about:
- Travel experiences
- Personal Stories
- Overcoming adversity or illness
- Life experiences
- Products reviews
- Family advice
- and More!
Or perhaps you want to pick something else entirely in a all new or trending niche. (Tip: See Google Trends for some inspiration)
It truly doesn’t matter, as long as you enjoy the topic at hand and are genuinely interested in learning more than you are on the right track.
With any blog topic you choose you can easily branch out into other areas of interest. Don’t feel that the initial topic of the blog will limit what you can blog about in the future.
Always feel free to experiment with a few topics and then see what is most compatible with your interests and your passions.
Choose a domain name for your blog
Buying a domain name for a new blog is a really fun thing to do. You can even ask friends and family for some inspiration. Others who are just starting to learn how to start a blog have a clear idea of the domain name they are looking to purchase (that is, if it available!)
At times, the most competitive domain names with the .com extension could already be taken. But don’t give up! There are just under 500 different domain extensions to choose from. (An extension is the ending part of a domain, such as .com or .com.au etc)
You’ll be able to find the perfect domain name for your blog in no time at all. Just don’t be too picky and get paralysed choosing the perfect name. Just go for it!
Some helpful tips when choosing a domain name for your blog
- Make it easy to type and differentiate yourself. You don’t want to choose a name that is too similar to someone else’s blog.
- Make it easily pronounceable. There’s no need need to confuse people with complicated spellings or do some creative spellings.
- Keep it short and simple. Fewer characters means less hassle for the user and less risk of mistyping (and more traffic!)
- Never use another company’s brand name or trademarked slogans. They will come after you and shut you down (even sue you!)
- Use broad keywords. Top level topics like Family are great, but you need to connect these big ideas to a precise topic. Like FamilyHelper etc.
- Make sure that the blog’s name is reputable. It needs to be intuitive to reach to the average internet user and of course, Google!
- Avoid all numbers and hyphens. These will actually confuse people and it makes it hard to narrate the domain to others.
Don’t overthink this, though. The key is to act now and take action.
How much does a domain cost for my blog?
A domain costs around $10-$25 per year. Many hosting companies add extra charges for additional features but you can also get a free domain name if you choose Bluehost for your hosting.
Hosting your New Blog
Web hosting is a storage service that allows the blog and website content to be accessed through the internet by other users.
Without a domain and web hosting, your blog cant’t be seen online or get any traffic. There are plenty of web hosting companies to choose from.
Shared hosting generally starts from $10 month all the way to $50 a month for dedicated server hosting (but you shouldn’t need that just yet!)
Personally I highly recommend Bluehost. They are the biggest and most best hosting company offering packages from as low as $2.95/month (that’s really low).
When first learning how to start a blog, don’t worry too much about being fancy or purchasing all the additional add-on options. When you’re ready for more features, Bluehost will be able to scale with you, and that’s another reason why I like them so much.
Check them out, and see if you can purchase a domain or hosting with them.
Choose a Blogging Platform
You need some sort of blogging platform to run your blog on. I run my blogs and websites on WordPress because it’s very user-friendly, powerful and best of all it’s completely free (when self-hosted).
There are a few other platforms to choose from which I will list here for you to check out:
- WordPress.org (self-hosted)
- WordPress.com (hosted)
My recommendation? Self-host a WordPress.org blog with Bluehost.
Choose a Good Blog Theme
Now that you have set up your initial blog hosting and purchased your domain, you would want to give your blog a unique look and feel.
Notice how each blog looks and feels different even if they are hosted on the same WordPress?
Your website design is what represents your blog’s personality, your brand feel and how good your visitors convert. This is why I recommend you choose a premium WordPress theme.
If you’re just starting to learn how to start a blog, you can just install the basic free themes that come with WordPress. Tinker around with the look and feel of the theme and undertake some customisations. If you think you need more features than choosing a premium blog theme is the way to go.
A premium theme will allow you to customise certain features you can’t normally edit in the free blog themes. Such as your footer, header, colours and other visual features.
